Ev Ricky was born in 1987 and lived on a farm in Nebraska. When Ev was two years old, Gene Fleming from nearby Hastings became aware of the plight of Ev. Fleming was an inventor and he thought he would be able to help. Fleming took care of Ev, and moved them to his farm in Hastings. Fleming's granddaughter, Jessica, named Ev after a girl she got into a fight with at junior high.

Initial failed attempts included Ev as a skateboard. Fleming then fitted Ev with specially adapted baby-sized shoes. Subsequently, Ev caught the attention of the media and Nike, which offered a lifetime deal to supply shoes for Ev.
